Once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned it can then be sealed, helping to prevent the build up of staining and contamination from recurring. Sealing involves applying a transparent protective treatment with up to a 15 year lifetime, not a coating that sits on the surface but an impregnation that not only seals but importantly allows the surface to breathe. It is recommended that all natural materials are sealed, limestone, sandstone, travertine and slate to name but a few. Sealing helps prevent contamination from spillages of tea, coffee, wine, beer etc. as well as preventing the build up of algae, moss and verdigris when used outside.

Unsealed granite counter top surfaces exposed to water for long periods of time can also cause excess moisture to penetrate the surface causing cracks and sometimes irreversible damage. Damage caused by common acidic agents or chlorides can cause weakening of the stone known as pitting. Chips star to appear and flaking begins to occur on the surface of the granite.
